Therefore the need to develop new classes of antibiotics is indispensable. Antimicrobial peptides are a relatively new class of potential antibiotics which are fast acting, possess broad-spectrum activity and are able to escape many of the currently known mechanisms of drug resistance. They have been shown to be active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, fungi, enveloped viruses and even cancer cells. However, toxicity to healthy host cells remains a concern and has affected the clinical development of therapeutics based on antimicrobial peptides. The purpose of this review is to discuss recent advances in research focused on antimicrobial peptides from frogs and the challenges in conducting research in this area in southern Africa. An extensive literature review of relevant articles published between 1980 and the present was conducted using PubMed, ScienceDirect, Sabinet, Elsevier and GoogleScholar. There has been little research done on anurans from southern Africa which are endemic to the region, and there is therefore a need to focus on this group for the purposes of bioprospecting for potentially new antimicrobial peptide compounds.

Expression analysis and identification of antimicrobial peptide transcripts from six North American frog species.
Frogs secrete antimicrobial peptides onto their skin. We describe an assay to preserve and analyze antimicrobial peptide transcripts from field-collected skin secretions that will complement existing methods for peptide analysis. We collected skin secretions from 4 North American species in the field in California and 2 species in the laboratory. Most frogs appeared healthy after release; howev...

The growing occurrence of bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics has called for the development of new classes of antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) with broad antimicrobial spectrum derived from frog skin secretions have been demonstrated to be promising candidates for new antibiotic development. A proven rich source of these compounds are the skin secretions of the ...
متن کاملEvidence from peptidomic analysis of skin secretions that the red-legged frogs, Rana aurora draytonii and Rana aurora aurora, are distinct species.
The northern red-legged frog Rana aurora aurora and the California red-legged frog Rana aurora draytonii are traditionally classified together in the same species group. Ten peptides with antimicrobial activity were isolated from norepinephrine-stimulated skin secretions of R. aurora draytonii and purified to near homogeneity. The peptides were identified as belonging to the ranatuerin-2 family...

Introduction: Today, research in the field of antimicrobial peptides is active. Thus, the aim of this study is to purify and determine biochemical properties (especially antimicrobial effect) of new antimicrobial peptides from skin secretions of bufo kavirensis. Methods: This is a descriptive study. The skin secretions of bufo was purified by biochemical manners and antimicrobial effects was ...
متن کاملIsolation and structural characterisation of a novel 13-amino acid insulin-releasing peptide from the skin secretion of Agalychnis calcarifer.
We describe the isolation and characterisation of an insulinotropic peptide from the skin secretions of Agalychnis calcarifer frogs. Peptides in crude secretions obtained by mild electrical stimulation from the dorsal skin surface were purified by reversed-phase HPLC, yielding fractions in two zones with insulin-releasing activity ( p <0.001). The peaks showing greatest in vitro insulin-releasi...
